Core Courses
Course Description Credits ED 454 Prepares teacher candidates to engage in culturally and linguistically responsive research-based practices to support diverse learners in PreK-12 classrooms. This course examines the relationships between language, culture, and cultural awareness in teaching. This course also explores many ways in which teachers may build the capacities for cultural diversity in the classroom. Emphasizes readiness for mutually accommodative professional practices with culturally and linguistically diverse learners and families.3 ED 470 This course is designed to teach the fundamental concepts needed by today’s educators to empower themselves as teachers of reading. Students will learn the sound-symbol correspondences of language and understand the critical role that phonological awareness, decoding, and sight word vocabulary play in early reading development. Students will also study the components of language comprehension (background knowledge, vocabulary, language structures) and how these skills contribute to skilled reading. This course is a prerequisite for ED 4XX – Disciplinary Literacy Methods for Elementary: ELA, Social Science, Science.3 ED 305 This course focuses on topics such as the impact of recent law and policy changes on diverse learners, issues relevant to specific disabilities, and accommodations and modifications for students with special education needs, English-language learners, and those who are advanced, gifted/talented learners. Additionally, the course will focus on differentiated instructional strategies to improve the achievement of all exceptional learners in content-specific areas.3 ED 4xx This course will focus on instruction with the acknowledgment of how instruction is influenced by both the curriculum (and thus the global world in which we live) and continuous and ongoing assessment. Grounded in research and theory, teacher candidates will begin practicing the process of planning quality instruction. Particular focus will be on integrating the curriculum, specifically the areas of fine arts, PE, and Health with core content areas. This course is a co-requisite or prerequisite for ED 4XX – Disciplinary Literacy Methods for Elementary: ELA, Social Science, Science and ED 4XX Math Literacy and Methods for Elementary Teachers.4 ED 4xx In this course, teachers will acquire the pedagogical skills necessary for teaching a wide range of literacy methods in English language arts, social studies, and science curriculums at the elementary level. Teachers will be taught effective, research-based reading instruction in the areas of phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, and writing. Specific topics will include assessment and instruction of foundational reading skills, strategies to develop reading and comprehension of narrative and informational text to build discipline-specific knowledge, methods of differentiating instruction for all learners, and selection of appropriate instructional materials. ED 470, Foundations in Reading, and ED 4XX, Curriculum and Instruction, are prerequisites for this course.4 ED 4xx This foundational course focuses on learning mathematics in the elementary classroom. Content explored in this class includes algebraic thinking, numeration, theory of whole numbers, integers, rational numbers, and real numbers. It also includes operations of arithmetic, elementary number theory, proportional reasoning, elementary data analysis, and basic concepts of geometry. This course is a pre-requisite for ED 4XX, Math Methods for Elementary Teachers.4 ED 4xx This course is the study of the specific theories, practices, and resources used by effective teachers to create effective and engaging learning environments for the study of mathematics. Candidates will learn to write effective lesson and unit plans, analyze student work, provide effective feedback, and use technology to enhance learning. ED 4XX, Math for Elementary Teachers, is a prerequisite for this course. ED 4XX, Curriculum and Instruction, is a corequisite or prerequisite for this course.3 ED 4xx In this course, students will explore research, theory, and best practices related to effective classroom management. Topics will include establishing an environment for learning, organizing and managing instruction, coping with daily challenges, and developing relationships with students, staff, and parents.4 PS 275 This course provides an interdisciplinary approach to the study of development across the early stages of the lifespan with emphasis on genetic and environmental influences; including prenatal development through the elementary school years.4 ED 4xx This 8-week course includes both a full-time teaching presence in a relevant K12 classroom and course material which will focus on the creation of effective assessments and the successful completion of the state-required performance assessment, the edTPA.4 Core Courses
